Stevens Institute of Technology Summer 2023 Pre-College Program in Pre-Med Biomedical EngineeringBiomedical engineering is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and medicine. This is evident throughout healthcare, from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and has entered the public conscience though the development of implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers and artificial hips, to more futuristic technologies such as stem cell engineering and the 3-D printing of biological organs. Over the course of the week students will have the opportunity to learn about career options available within the field of biomedical engineering, speak with industry professionals, use carious medical devices and learn how to analyze physiology data during labs, and learn about applying engineering principles to better healthcare and society.
Connecticut Boys StateThe American Legion Boys State of Connecticut is a six-day hands on experience in the operation and fundamentals of government. Connecticut Boys State draws together the best and brightest high school juniors to help lead them down the path of individual success and leadership through "doing," not just learning.
One idea paramount above any other at Connecticut Boys State: That the individual is the one with the power to change the world. Whether athlete or politician, journalist, or scientist, each and every one of us has the power to make a difference in the world.
Using our democratic system as a basis, we equip the participants, or citizens, each year to construct their own state, utilizing the core values that hold true in our everyday lives. We teach the need for competition, the value of public service, the strength of the individual voice and vote. By reinforcing these basic American ideals, we help to shape the future of our society. This is what the American Legion Boys State of Connecticut program is all about. Citizens of The American Legion Boys State of Connecticut are eligible to receive college credit and scholarships for participating and successfully completing Boys State.

Shanelle Dupre, Adult Programmer for the Thomaston Public Library, will speak about an upcoming grant-funded senior memoir writing workshop. A Creative Aging in Connecticut Program This class is designed for those age 55 and over who would like to get their own stories down on paper. Through writing exercises and discussion, students will delve into the themes, times, places, and people of their lives. From this material, stories will be developed. Students will learn what makes a story a memoir, how to identify themes and stories from their own lives, the craft of writing scenes, how to revise and edit, and how to effectively share their work with others. Each student will develop at least one story during class time. This is a cumulative program and participants are encouraged to attend all classes. This class is limited to 15 people and registration is required before the start of the third class. Advancing Creative Aging in Connecticut is supported by a generous grant from the Pasculano Foundation. Thank you to the Lifetime Arts, Connecticut Office of the Arts and Connecticut State Library for sponsoring this program.

Looking forward to seeing Thomaston's Rotarians today at
Light Up the Town!
As is the annual tradition, the Rotary Club of Thomaston will be supporting Light Up the Town by serving free hot cocoa in front of the law office of Seabourne, Malley and Turner (30 Main Street).
Volunteers should work at least a 1 hour shift at the hot cocoa table. When you arrive, just get behind the hot cocoa table and start pouring and serving!
And when you're done volunteering, enjoy some hot cocoa yourself along with the festivities.
The festivities begin at 5:45PM today.
Check Facebook for more details and a map of events, activities, and free food and drink.
